Bonobon — Privacy & Data Policy

1. Introduction

We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy & Data Policy explains how Bonobon handles personal data. It describes what data is processed, where it is stored, and your rights under applicable data protection laws, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The short version: Bonobon stores all your data locally on your device. We do not operate servers that collect or store your personal information. The only external service the app communicates with is OpenAI, which processes the text you submit to generate language learning content.

3. Data Stored on Your Device

Bonobon stores the following data locally on your device using your browser's or device's local storage:

  • Language preferences (native language, target language, proficiency level)
  • Saved words and vocabulary lists
  • Learning activity statistics (exercises completed, quiz scores)
  • UI preferences (e.g., tip dismissals)

This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us. It is deleted automatically if you clear the app's data or uninstall the app.

4. Data Sent to OpenAI

When you use AI-powered features (reading content generation, word translation, writing practice, chat), the text you enter is sent to OpenAI's API to generate a response. This is the only data transmission that occurs when using Bonobon.

Bonobon does not include any identifying information (name, email, device ID) in requests to OpenAI. Requests contain only the text necessary to generate the requested language learning content.

OpenAI processes this data in accordance with their own privacy policy and data processing terms, available at https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.

Legal basis for this processing: Legitimate interests (providing the core AI functionality of the app).

5. Data We Do Not Collect

Bonobon does not collect or store:

  • Names, email addresses, or contact information
  • Account credentials (no accounts exist)
  • Location data
  • Device identifiers
  • Behavioral analytics or tracking data
  • Payment information (handled entirely by Apple App Store or Google Play)

6. Cookies and Local Storage

The Bonobon app uses your device's local storage (equivalent to localStorage in web apps) to save your words and progress. This data stays on your device only and functions similarly to a local file — it is not a tracking cookie and is not shared with anyone.

7. Children's Privacy

Bonobon is available to users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. Because Bonobon does not collect any personal data on our servers, there is no risk of inadvertent collection from minors. If you have concerns, please contact us at privacy@bonobon.app.

8. International Data Transfers

Your device data stays on your device and is not transferred internationally by us. Text submitted to OpenAI may be processed on servers outside the European Economic Area (EEA). OpenAI provides appropriate safeguards for such transfers in accordance with GDPR, including Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).

9. Your Rights Under GDPR

Under GDPR, you have the following rights regarding personal data:

  • Right to access — request information about data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification — request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Right to erasure — request deletion of your data.
  • Right to restriction of processing.
  • Right to data portability.
  • Right to object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Because Bonobon stores data locally on your device, you have direct control over your data at all times. You can delete all locally stored data by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling the app.

10. Data Security

Since no personal data is stored on our servers, there is no server-side data at risk. Data stored on your device is protected by your device's own security mechanisms (OS-level sandboxing, encryption). We recommend keeping your device's operating system and the Bonobon app up to date.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy to reflect changes in the app or legal requirements. The updated version will be published within the app and on our website with a revised effective date. For material changes, we will notify you via an in-app notification.
